Members of the Greenburgh Police Department and Firefighters from the Elmsford Fire Department on Thursday unloaded 800 turkeys that Stop & Shop donated to the Food Bank for Westchester.
Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program will deliver nearly 21,000 turkeys to hunger relief organizations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island this holiday season.
The Food Bank for Westchester serves more than 220 local hunger-relief programs throughout Westchester, including food pantries, soup kitchens, child and adult day-care centers, and shelters. The Food Bank provides 95 percent of all the food given to hungry families, children and seniors as cooked meals or groceries to take home.
Advocates for the food challenged in Westchester say the situation become more challenging at the start of this month when the federal government cut the assistance it provided to those in need, The monthly maximum benefit under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps was cut by $11 a month to $189 for a single person, and $36 a month, to $632 for four-person families.
