Voters in Mount Vernon will go to the polls Tuesday to pick four library trustees and vote on a $4.35 million library budget. The polling place will at the library and will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The library has been funded by the city but the state has determined that it should be funded through its own tax with a budget voted on by the public. The city is cutting off funding after September.
The budget carries a tax rate of $28.32 per $1,000 of assessed value. The owner of a home assessed at $10,000 would pay $283.20 a year. The taxes will be about 2 percent of a property tax bill, according to the library. City taxes will also decrease.
The library has said if the budget goes down the library will close or be severely cut back.
